Shami retires from Test cricket, to continue playing white-ball formats

The veteran pacer ends a 13-year Test career with 229 wickets and says he will keep playing white-ball cricket for India and domestic sides.

  • Today, Mohammed Shami announced his retirement from Test cricket, ending a 13-year career in the longest format. The 36-year-old shared his decision via an emotional Instagram video on the anniversary of his debut.
  • Against the West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Shami made his Test debut in 2013. Over 64 matches, he claimed 229 wickets, establishing himself as a premier pace bowler for India.
  • His ability to generate reverse swing and maintain an upright seam made him vital to India's pace attack. He recorded 6/56 as his best innings figures and a match haul of 9 for 118 against the West Indies.
  • Included in Bengal's 19-member squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shami will continue playing white-ball cricket. He intends to remain available for domestic and IPL formats.
  • His final Test appearance came during the World Test Championship Final against Australia in 2023. Shami acknowledged the role of the BCCI and the Cricket Association of Bengal in his development.
