The Bihar Cricket Association named the 17-year-old Rajasthan Royals batter after he scored 776 runs in IPL 2026 and made his India T20I debut.
On Friday, the Bihar Cricket Association appointed teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as captain of Bihar for the opening two matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, which begins November 14. The 15-year-old will lead a 17-member squad.
Bihar Cricket Association president Harsh Vardhan said the captaincy aims to develop Sooryavanshi's leadership skills, noting his maturity and confidence at a young age. Suraj Kashyap was named vice-captain to support the team.
Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs in the IPL at a strike rate over 237 and smashed 175 in the Under-19 World Cup final. He has played 10 T20 Internationals, recently combining with Abhishek Sharma to post 118 runs in the powerplay.
Bihar faces Saurashtra in their opening match on November 14 in Indore. Placed in Group B, the team competes against Delhi, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Railways, and Tamil Nadu.
All-Rounder Mangal Mahour and pacer Shakib Hussain will undergo fitness assessments after Bihar's opening matches before squad participation is confirmed. Sooryavanshi previously served as vice-captain for East Zone during the 2026-27 Duleep Trophy.
