‘Severe’ solar storm expected to come in Earth’s direction
The storm could disrupt satellites and power grids but widespread blackouts are unlikely, with a yellow warning issued for a G3 storm and possible escalation to G4.
- From 12.01am tomorrow the Met Office issued a yellow space weather warning from 12.01am tomorrow to 11.59pm on Wednesday for a likely G3 geomagnetic storm, warning it could escalate to G4.
- Met Office space weather manager Krista Hammond said the Sun unleashed a coronal mass ejection carrying protons, electrons and helium nuclei toward Earth overnight or tomorrow morning.
- Radio frequencies and GPS satellite navigation may be degraded for hours, spacecraft and low Earth orbit satellites could face surface charging and tracking problems, and power systems and operators might see voltage control issues.
- The UK has a chance of seeing aurorae as plasma interacts with Earth, but cloud and rain on Tuesday evening may hinder sightings, and AuroraWatch UK reports `no significant activity`.
- Forecasts remain tentative until measurements arrive from NASA ACE and DSCOVR, which are about one million miles away, giving roughly an hour's warning amid uncertain CME timing.
