Serena Williams Draws 20-Year-Old Maya Joint in First Wimbledon Singles Match in 4 Years
The 44-year-old returns to singles after nearly four years away and will also team with sister Venus in doubles.
On Tuesday, June 30, 44-year-old Serena Williams will face Australian Maya Joint in the first round of Wimbledon for her first singles match in nearly four years.
Williams accepted a wildcard entry for the grass-court Grand Slam, marking her first singles appearance since a 2022 U.S. Open loss to Ajla Tomljanovic.
Coach Rick Macci, who trained the Williams sisters ages 9 to 15, expects Williams to be competitive, saying she is "wired differently" and impressed in practice with 122 mph serves.
Tournament organizers released the main draw on Friday, June 26, with Williams favored to win her opening match and potentially face Alex Eala in the second round.
Returning at 44, Williams joins a rare club of older competitors in the Open Era, including Martina Navratilova and Kimiko Date, as Wimbledon begins Monday, June 29, with no clear favorite.
Serena Williams will face a rival less than half her age when she plays against the 20-year-old Maya Joint in the first round of Wimbledon, her first singles match in almost four years.
