News24 | Police Minister Hits Back at Claims of Links to Vusimusi ‘Cat’ Matlala
SOUTH AFRICA, JUL 9 – Senzo Mchunu denies improper links to businessman Matlala and Brown Mogotsi amid calls for investigation into a disputed R360 million police tender and alleged political interference.
- On 9 July, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu refuted any connections with Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala and stated he was not involved in the cancellation of a R360 million police medical services tender.
- These denials followed allegations by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that Mchunu interfered with political murder investigations and disbanded a related task team in December.
- Mchunu acknowledged his acquaintance with Mogotsi, describing him merely as a comrade, and denied having asked for or obtained any benefits from either Matlala or Mogotsi while ordering a review that ultimately resulted in the cancellation of the tender.
- Mkhwanazi presented alleged WhatsApp exchanges between Matlala and Mogotsi and revealed that more than 120 case files had been handed over but left inactive, prompting public demand for greater transparency and a comprehensive inquiry.
- President Cyril Ramaphosa called for calm amid escalating tensions and highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of security services while responding to demands for a thorough inquiry into the allegations.
