Stock Markets End Largely Unchanged Amid Elevated Crude Oil Prices, Selling in Bank Stocks
Selling in bank stocks and elevated crude prices kept benchmark Indian equities nearly unchanged, with the Sensex and Nifty closing marginally lower.
- On Tuesday, Indian benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty ended largely flat in volatile trading. The BSE Sensex dipped 8.08 points, or 0.01 per cent, to settle at 73,598.67, while the NSE Nifty skidded 3.45 points, or 0.02 per cent, to close at 22,749.75.
- High crude prices and caution ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision overshadowed supportive global cues, according to Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments, who cited these factors as key drivers of market flatness.
- Banking heavyweights State Bank of India, Axis Bank, and HDFC Bank were major laggards, while Nifty Realty rose 1.94 per cent. Brent crude prices remained elevated at $115.8 per barrel, constraining investor appetite.
- Despite the flat main indices, broader market resilience emerged as 18 of 30 Sensex companies closed in the green and the BSE SmallCap Select Index rose 2.59 per cent, signaling strength in smaller-cap stocks.
- Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, Founder and CEO of HST Wealth, noted that sustained crude decline could improve corporate margins, though "any fresh supply disruption would quickly revive inflation concerns," constraining market outlook.
