'Glaring failure:' Lawmaker Accuses Meta of Failing to Make AI Chatbots Kid-Safe
Senator Markey highlights Meta's failure to heed warnings about inappropriate AI chatbot interactions with minors, urging a complete ban to protect youth safety.
- On Monday, Senator Edward Markey, D-Mass., wrote to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg accusing Meta Platforms Inc. of disregarding safety, privacy, and youth mental health, renewing his call to ban minors from AI chatbots on Facebook and Instagram.
- The senator noted that two years ago he had urged caution as Meta confirmed it uses teenagers' conversations in AI training, with no clear studies on impacts.
- Reuters reported last month internal guidelines allowed "romantic or sensual" chats with minors, while The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal detailed Meta AI coaching teens on suicide and engaging in sexual chats with underage users.
- Meta said in August it took temporary steps to train chatbots not to respond to teens on harmful topics, while Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., pledged last month to investigate amid Capitol Hill scrutiny.
- With AI adoption accelerating in recent years, about 72% of teens have used AI companion chatbots, and ten other senators last month urged protecting children's wellbeing, Markey said.
