Senate Ag Committee advances farm bill
The bill would replace the 2018 law and add year-round E15, country-of-origin labeling for beef and new disaster aid for farmers.
- The Senate Agriculture Committee advanced the Agricultural Act of 2026, also known as Farm Bill 2.0, on a 12-11 party-line vote Wednesday afternoon, following a stalled August 6 markup.
- Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith supported the comprehensive measure, which modernizes the farm safety net by significantly increasing reference prices and crop insurance enhancements to address agricultural headwinds.
- The bill includes mandatory country-of-origin labeling for beef and permanent, year-round E15 authorization. Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor called E15 an 'urgent priority' for farmers and consumers.
- Industry groups praised the advancement, though NSP Chair Amy France cautioned, 'Today's progress matters, but the work is not finished,' signaling continued Senate and House action needed.
- House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn Thompson noted the Senate bill complements bipartisan legislation the House passed in April, as lawmakers face a shrinking legislative calendar to finalize passage.
