MINNESOTA STATE CAPITOL BUILDING, AUG 6 – Security at the Minnesota State Capitol was increased after a July breach and June shootings, reducing public entrances from three to two and requiring key card access at other doors.
- On Wednesday, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety begins tightening access at the Minnesota State Capitol, limiting entrances from three to two after last month’s breach.
- Following the June 14 shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses, security was heightened after a July 25 breach where a man was found naked in the Senate chambers.
- The Minnesota State Patrol is enforcing tighter controls by reducing access to two entrances, installing alarms on every door, and requiring key card access for all other doors.
- Accessible parking users at the Senate building ramp must call Capitol Security for an escort.
- Later this month, the Advisory Committee on Capitol Security will meet on Aug. 20, and an independent Capitol security assessment is ongoing with more recommendations expected.
