Securities regulator says data breach last summer affected 750,000 Canadians’ investment accounts
CIRO discovered the breach last summer and is offering two years of credit monitoring to 750,000 affected investors after a five-month investigation.
- CIRO began notifying roughly 750,000 affected investors on Wednesday, sending letters and e-mails dated Jan. 14 about the breach of personal information and account statements.
- CIRO identified a `sophisticated phishing attack` on Aug. 11 that compromised systems, prompting precautionary shutdowns and more than 8,000 hours of investigation through unstructured data.
- CIRO found that registration information for about 100,000 financial advisers was accessed, including dates of birth, phone numbers, annual income, social insurance and investment account numbers.
- CIRO is offering two years of credit monitoring from Equifax and TransUnion and has notified law enforcement and privacy commissioners, saying mailed letters could take several weeks to arrive.
- CIRO had informed member firms within 24 hours and mailed approximately 400,000 notifications that month, while CEO Andrew Kriegler apologized for the breach and defended the longer investigation.
