US to Launch Secret Spaceship Into Orbit
KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLORIDA, JUL 29 – The mission will test laser communications and the highest performing quantum inertial sensor to improve navigation and communication resilience in GPS-denied environments, the Space Force said.
- On August 21, 2025, the U.S. Space Force will send the X-37B spaceplane on its upcoming flight, deploying it into orbit from Kennedy Space Center aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
- The mission continues a program begun in 2010 to advance reusable spacecraft technology and conduct experiments that can return to Earth for analysis.
- OTV-8 will feature advanced technologies such as a laser communications demonstration using infrared light and a state-of-the-art quantum inertial sensor that represents the most capable device of its kind to have operated in space.
- General Chance Saltzman explained these technologies will enhance satellite communications resilience and navigation in GPS-denied environments amid current and emerging threats.
- The mission seeks to enhance the resilience of U.S. space operations and sustain a competitive advantage in the spaceplane development race against China, whose Shenlong spaceplane carried out its third mission toward the end of 2024.

Space Force schedules the next mission for its secret robot plane
The US Space Force will bid the summer farewell by once again launching its (not-so-secret) secret space plane, the X-37B. According to a July 28 announcement, the Boeing-manufactured orbital test vehicle is scheduled to embark on its eighth mission (OTV-8) from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on August 21. After hitching a ride aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, the X-37B will orbit high above Earth while facilitating multiple payload experiments.…
Only a few months after completing its seventh orbital mission, the Space Force's X-37B experimental shuttle is about to return to space. For this eighth flight – scheduled for August 21 from the Kennedy Space Center on board a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket – the goal ...
