Seattle Times sues Microsoft and OpenAI over copyright infringement
- The Seattle Times and Newsday filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft in the Southern District of New York, alleging the tech giants used their journalism to train AI models without permission.
- Scraping paywalled content for ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and AI-powered Bing, the companies allegedly reproduced passages from the outlets' reporting without consent or compensation.
- "We feel strongly that we must defend our content from being used without our consent or compensation," wrote Seattle Times president and CEO Alan Fisco. Microsoft said it was willing to "sit down and explore solutions."
- Last week, the Trump administration's Department of Justice filed a Statement of Interest in the New York Times case, arguing a publisher victory would "threaten national security" by stalling AI advancement.
- Demanding destruction of training datasets incorporating their material, the publishers join previous litigants Ziff Davis and Mashable in escalating legal battles over AI training data rights.
