OpenAI offers AI for chip design, touts cost advantage over open-source, CFO says
Sarah Friar said enterprise revenue rose 32% from June to July as OpenAI cut Luna prices 80% and tested outcome-based pricing.
On Monday in San Francisco, Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar announced OpenAI is targeting specialized industries and undercutting rivals on cost as the ChatGPT maker accelerates enterprise growth.
Growing competition from Anthropic and Chinese open-source models prompted the shift, as Friar noted deploying OpenAI's Luna model is cheaper than running Chinese alternatives like GLM 5.3 on cloud layers.
OpenAI recently cut Luna prices by 80 per cent, driving a roughly 10-fold usage increase. Enterprise revenue rose 32 per cent from June to July, outpacing 20 per cent overall growth, while Codex reached 25 million users.
Enterprise and consumer businesses reached an even split by mid-year, meeting targets ahead of schedule. The ChatGPT maker is experimenting with pricing based on business outcomes rather than usage, addressing client demands for return on investment.
Demonstrating its own technology, OpenAI used internal models to develop the Jalapeno chip, which was "taped out" within nine months. This marks internal validation of its systems for accelerating product development cycles.
