School's out for Port Alberni students after small fire at high school

Students attending a secondary school in Port Alberni were given an unexpected day off following a fire early on the morning of May 8, 2025.
The fire ignited shortly before 7 a.m. In a classroom located on an upper level directly over the automotive shop, activating the sprinklers and leading to a 911 emergency call.
Firefighters from multiple nearby departments quickly contained the fire with sprinklers suppressing most flames, but smoke and water damage extended beyond the initial room.
Deputy Fire Chief Travis Cross reported that the firefighters completely put out the fire and verified that it had not spread to other areas of the school, and he added that staff had notified parents about the school's closure.
Although the cause remains under investigation and "doesn't appear to be suspicious," the school closure required cleaning efforts but did not affect the nearby track and field championships.
