Schools, band office closed after Saskatchewan shooting kills one, injures another

RCMP say the suspect was arrested after a shelter-in-place order, and schools and the band office will stay closed for the rest of the week.

  • A shooting near the local health clinic in Pelican Narrows, Saskatchewan, killed one person and injured another on Monday. The RCMP took a suspect into custody late Monday after ordering residents to shelter in place for nearly six hours.
  • Following the violence, officials with Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation ordered schools and the band office closed for the week. The health centre will provide limited services to clients with serious medical needs to ensure community safety.
  • Dr. John-Michael Stevens, who has served the clinic for nine years, stated that community members are "very, very fearful." He warned the resilient spirit of Pelican Narrows is being "torn down" by recent acts of violence.
  • Returning to Pelican Narrows on Tuesday, Stevens expects to find a community that is "emotionally broken" and in need of support. He plans to focus on "a lot of debriefing, a lot of chatting, supporting" to help residents.
  • Stevens, who lives in Saskatoon, received news of the shooting while working in Sandy Bay, Sask., about 70 kilometres away. He told The Canadian Press that residents fear it is "only a matter of time" before a larger tragedy occurs.
