School slammed over white bread ban, strict food rules
The preschool said the rules follow safer-eating guidance and Ofsted findings, and parents were told no child will be left hungry.
Following an Ofsted inspection that identified safeguarding concerns, Busy Otters Preschool in Devon implemented a strict 'Safer Eating Policy' for student lunchboxes recently.
The school now prohibits items like potato chips, chocolate, and white bread, while requiring fruits and vegetables be cut into specific shapes to prevent choking hazards.
Parents reacted on Facebook with frustration, one saying "Jeeez, my kids would be going hungry😂," while the school will send home slips informing families of non-compliant items.
Chair Thomas Prideaux defended the measures, stating they align with Early Years Foundation Stage requirements. "We want to reassure parents that no child will be left hungry," he said.
Prideaux noted the backlash has affected staff well-being and urged the public to remember Busy Otters is a charity-run setting managed by a dedicated voluntary committee.
