Man arrested after school coach crashes into ditch in Hampshire

The driver, suspected of driving under the influence, caused the crash involving 29 children and four teachers with no serious injuries reported.

  • On Thursday, September 25, a coach travelling from the Bristol area left the southbound carriageway and went into a ditch on the A36 near Ower shortly after 5.10am, carrying 33 passengers including 29 school children and four teachers.
  • The driver, a 48-year-old man from Hungerford, Berkshire, was taken to Southampton General Hospital as a precaution and later arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and being unfit through drink and/or drugs.
  • Police said all 29 children were uninjured, while one teacher sustained a minor leg injury treated at the scene among the four teachers on board.
  • The southbound carriageway was closed for several hours during the morning rush hour and has now reopened following a complex recovery of the coach; police appealed for dash-cam footage, asking motorists to call 101 quoting reference 44250432585.
  • Emergency services, Hampshire Constabulary said, `Emergency services are in attendance to facilitate the recovery of the vehicle. It is anticipated that the southbound carriageway will be closed for a number of hours this morning while this work takes place` and all parents have been contacted.
