SCEMD reports 2 more earthquakes rattle Ladson area

Six small earthquakes have shaken Charleston County since Feb. 3, with the latest 2.5-magnitude quake felt near Centerville, US Geological Survey reported.

  • SCEMD reported a shallow 2.5-magnitude tremor Wednesday night about 3.75 miles southeast of Centerville, Charleston County, at a depth of half a mile.
  • Scientists call the pattern a 'swarm', describing the 2.5 event as part of a recent series since Feb. 3 including a 2.9-magnitude quake Saturday night.
  • More than 800 people reported feeling Saturday's earthquake to the USGS, and no major damage has been reported by SCEMD in the Ladson area.
  • Rep. Gil Gatch introduced House Bill 3227 in January to require insurers to offer earthquake coverage and mandate waivers for homeowners who decline it, while local insurers say coverage is an add-on.
  • Historic quakes remind officials of long-term risk, as South Carolina Geological Survey maps faults after the Aug. 31, 1886 Charleston earthquake and scientists say short-term prediction remains unavailable.
