Human Bones Found in American Woods Confirmed as Remains of Missing Scottish Man
A 10-month investigation with Interpol and Scottish police confirmed the remains belonged to John Gillies, and officials are arranging their return to Scotland.
On June 30, 2026, the Wyoming State Crime Laboratory positively identified human remains found near Sweetwater Gap as John Gillies, a Scottish man reported missing approximately six years ago.
Wyoming Game and Fish personnel discovered scattered skeletal remains in September 2025, prompting a 14-member search team to scan 20 miles of rugged terrain and recover 85% of the skeleton.
Investigators collaborated with Interpol, Police Scotland, and Saint Mary's Church in Kirkintilloch to locate the family, while Gillies' ex-wife provided medical history and personal details, writing: "I wanted you to know he was more than bones."
The Sublette County Sheriff's Office is coordinating with Interpol to return Gillies' remains to Scotland for burial, though officials state the cause of death remains unclear due to time elapsed.
Sublette County Sheriff K.C. Lehr stated the case demonstrates international partnership strength, noting the investigation united partners with the "one shared goal--to give a family answers.
