Saudi Arabia quietly shelving NEOM Stadium, one of 2034 World Cup venues
MEED Projects values the 46,000-seat venue at $2.5 billion as Saudi Arabia shifts resources to other World Cup stadiums.
- Saudi Arabia is shelving plans for the NEOM Stadium, a 46,000-seat venue originally slated for the 2034 FIFA World Cup, after delays and downscaling of the futuristic development housing it.
- The NEOM Stadium was originally envisioned as an elevated arena within The Line, a 160-kilometer steel and glass structure; however, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's Vision 2030 initiative has increasingly deprioritized costly giga-projects.
- MEED Projects, a Dubai-based construction tracker, lists the venue as "on hold" among $22.7 billion in regional developments. Last week, the Ministry of Finance reported a 3.6% GDP contraction following oil activity declines.
- The Hosting Higher Authority, to which the Ministry of Sports redirected inquiries, did not address the NEOM Stadium status but stated "substantial delivery" of construction milestones for the tournament is already taking place.
- While the NEOM venue stalls, other infrastructure projects remain on track. The Aramco Stadium in Al Khobar is scheduled for completion this year, and Riyadh is working to build or renovate 15 venues for the expanded 48-team 2034 FIFA World Cup.
