Saronic Breaks Ground on Port Alpha, a New Model for American Shipbuilding
The shipyard will add 150,000 gross tons of annual capacity and is expected to create up to 10,000 jobs, officials said.
- On Wednesday, Saronic Technologies broke ground on Port Alpha, a more than $3 billion shipyard in Brownsville, Texas, joined by Governor Greg Abbott, Vice President JD Vance, and CEO Dino Mavrookas.
- Saronic designed the facility to address the United States' shipbuilding capacity shortage, producing autonomous and manned vessels at scale. Mavrookas stated the yard will solve the country's "capacity problem."
- Port Alpha will initially occupy roughly 800 acres, expandable to 4,000, introducing 150,000 gross tons of annual shipbuilding capacity. The project expects to generate up to 10,000 jobs and an estimated $264.5 billion economic impact on Texas.
- Saronic secured a roughly $280 million Navy contract to build Landing Craft Utility vessels, while the service is purchasing 10 Marauder medium unmanned surface vessels. Production capacity for 20 Marauders annually begins January 1, 2027.
- The shipyard positions Texas as a leader in defense manufacturing, with vessel deliveries expected to begin in late 2028. Port Alpha will bolster the domestic fleet to meet modern maritime and national security demands.
