Santander agrees to pay compensation on mis-sold car loans
The watchdog expects 12.1 million mis-sold deals to be covered, with lenders able to start payouts immediately.
On Saturday, Santander announced it will not challenge the Financial Conduct Authority compensation scheme, stating the decision reflects a desire for customer certainty.
Covering agreements made between April 6, 2007, and November 1, 2024, the scheme primarily addresses discretionary commission arrangements , which were banned in 2021.
Projections indicate about 12.1 million mis-sold deals will receive compensation totaling about £7.5 billion, with payouts averaging £829 per eligible individual claiming redress.
Following more than 1,000 consultation responses from lenders and consumer groups, the FCA tightened eligibility criteria to ensure compensation reaches only those treated unfairly.
Lenders can begin making payments immediately, with people who have already complained prioritized; millions of claims are expected settled by the end of 2027.
