Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez, Merkley Announce Bill to Ban Flock Cameras
The Ban Flock Act would bar federal agencies from using automatic license plate readers and cut off grants to state and local governments that use them.
On Friday, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Sen. Jeff Merkley introduced the Ban Flock Act, legislation designed to bar federal agencies from using AI-powered license plate readers or accessing collected data.
Lawmakers moved to curb the technology following reports of officer misuse, including romantic stalking and harassment. The ACLU notes Flock Safety operates more than 120,000 cameras nationwide, creating an extensive vehicle-tracking database.
Ocasio-Cortez warned that "AI-powered cameras are keeping track of our every move and weaponizing this data against working people to make record profits." Sanders argued the technology "eviscerates the very notion of privacy."
The bill prohibits federal grant funding for state and local governments using the cameras and allows Americans to sue the federal government for rights violations through use of automatic license plate readers.
Rep. Thomas Massie introduced the Flock-Off Act last month to restrict local purchases, even as President Donald Trump defended the cameras as useful for law enforcement, reflecting bipartisan concern.
