Samsung to fend off Chinese foldable phone rivals with slimmer model

SOUTH KOREA, JUL 9 – Samsung targets premium smartphone leadership with foldables 26% thinner and smartwatches featuring Google’s AI assistant, while foldables make up 16% of sales over $800, Canalys said.

  • Samsung unveiled thinner, lighter Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 foldable phones with AI integration at a New York event on July 8, 2025.
  • The launch comes after Samsung was overtaken by Apple as the world’s top smartphone seller in 2023 and is now contending with increasing competition from Chinese brands Huawei and Honor.
  • Samsung introduced premium upgrades like Snapdragon 8 Elite in Fold 7, Exynos chips in Flip 7, and reduced Fold 7's weight by 10% and thickness by 26%.
  • Foldable phones make up only a small fraction—around 1.5%—of the overall smartphone market, with Samsung’s foldable devices representing 4% of its total phone sales; additionally, the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 has been increased by 5% to $1,999.
  • Samsung aims to prove foldables' everyday and novel value by focusing on AI leadership, supply chain diversification, and sales in the US, Europe, and South Korea amid intense competition.
