Samsung Unveils Industry's Fastest UFS 5.0 Solution for Next-Gen On-Device AI Applications
Samsung says the new storage is more than twice as fast as UFS 4.1 and will begin mass production in the fourth quarter.
On Tuesday, Samsung Electronics unveiled its UFS 5.0 storage solution, engineered to enable artificial intelligence models to run directly on devices without requiring network connections.
Generative AI is rapidly shifting from cloud-based computing to on-device processing, driving a surge in data volumes that must be processed locally and stored efficiently.
The new chip delivers read speeds up to 10.8GB per second and write speeds up to 9.5GB per second, more than double the previous UFS 4.1 standard; power efficiency improved by more than 40%.
Samsung engineered the solution into a package measuring 7.5mm x 13mm x 0.9mm, making it 16.7% smaller than its predecessor and offering device makers increased design flexibility.
Mass production will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, Samsung announced. "Storage devices are evolving into a key driver defining AI experiences," said Jangseok Choi, head of Memory Product Planning at Samsung Electronics.
