Samsung is making its next e-paper display from plankton — yes, really!
Samsung's 13-inch Color E-Paper uses 10% phytoplankton bio-resin housing and 45% recycled plastic to reduce petroleum-based materials and lower energy consumption, Samsung said.
- Samsung announced the EM13DX 13-inch Color E-Paper built with a bio-resin derived from phytoplankton, targeting businesses for signage on store shelves, menus, and office doors.
- To reduce reliance on petroleum-based plastics, Samsung said phytoplankton bio-resin cuts manufacturing carbon emissions by over 40% and the gadget ships in a paper-only box.
- The panel measures 13.3 inches and offers a 1600 x 1200 resolution with a 4:3 aspect ratio, weighs 0.9 kg, has a 17.9 mm profile, and uses 0 watts for static content, Samsung said.
- Availability is currently limited and not aimed at general consumers, as consumers and Kindle fans cannot buy it from Amazon and Best Buy and it lacks a traditional operating system.
- Only 10% of the housing is phytoplankton-derived with about 45% recycled plastic, Samsung did not explain processing, while TCL launched the 11.5-inch NXTPAPER last month at $529 and Amazon sells the 11-inch Kindle Scribe Colorsoft for $629.99.
