Samajwadi Party Protests Demolition Orders at Jauhar University
The notice could shut down the 250-acre campus, while students protest and officials say only two of the 40 buildings had valid approvals.
- The Rampur Development Authority issued a notice on July 15 to demolish 38 of 40 buildings at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University by August 5, effectively shutting down the 250-acre institution founded by Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan.
- District Magistrate Ajay Dwivedi, Vice-Chairman of the Rampur Development Authority, says the university was given ample time to respond to irregularities before the demolition notice, citing unapproved building maps and improper land use designations.
- Students launched an indefinite sit-in against the order, with 26-year-old Mohd Shoaib, an M. Pharma student, stating, "Our future is at stake," as about 2,400 students fear degree invalidation.
- The administration established a Student Counselling Centre to facilitate transfers, largely to Guru Jambeshwar University, but affected students are rejecting the option, asserting, "We do not wish to go anywhere else."
- Rampur district lacks other universities, with the nearest institution 50 km away in Moradabad, a concern compounded by the district's low literacy rates recorded in the 2011 Census.
