Sam Forstag Declares Victory in Dem Primary for Montana's 1st Congressional District
Forstag won after a late vote count and will face Libertarian Nick Sheedy and Republican Aaron Flint in November.
On Wednesday, Sam Forstag secured the Democratic nomination for Montana's 1st Congressional District, edging out Ryan Busse. The seat is currently held by Rep. Ryan Zinke and covers western Montana cities including Missoula and Bozeman.
Trailing Ryan Busse on Tuesday evening, Forstag overcame the deficit as votes were tallied into Wednesday morning. Busse conceded the race to Forstag on Wednesday morning.
A former wildland firefighter and smokejumper, Forstag served as vice president of the local National Federation of Federal Employees union. Last week, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held a rally in Missoula to support his campaign.
Forstag said his campaign prioritizes working-class representation, aiming to address grocery costs, universal childcare, and Affordable Health Care Act subsidies. He told MTN he wants Montanans to have these protections.
By securing the nomination, Forstag will face Libertarian Nick Sheedy and Republican Aaron Flint in the November general election. Two other primary candidates, Russl Cleveland and Matt Rains, finished third and fourth, respectively.
