Aussies Still Can't Get Enough of Electric Cars
More than 23,000 new EVs were sold as low-emission vehicles made up 48% of July sales, industry figures showed.
- During July, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries and Electric Vehicle Council reported a sales record, with motorists purchasing more than 108,000 new vehicles as electric cars made up 21.7 per cent of sales.
- Low-Emission cars, including hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, accounted for 48 per cent of sales during the month, while petrol car sales dropped 30 per cent and diesel fell compared to 2025.
- More than 23,000 Australians purchased new electric vehicles during July, with the Tesla Model, BYD Sealion, Geely EX5, and Zeekr ranking among the best-selling vehicles.
- Toyota maintained its market lead with an almost 20 per cent share, while BYD remained Australia's second-most popular automotive brand, with the RAV4 SUV and HiLux topping the monthly sales chart.
- Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries chief executive Tony Weber warned that "there is a risk that the rapid increase in electric vehicle uptake in 2026 will outpace the supply of public charging infrastructure.
