Ashfall warning in Japan as volcano erupts
The eruption at Sakurajima's Minamidake crater sent ash up to 4,400 meters, with ashfall warnings issued for multiple prefectures, officials said.

- The Minamidake crater exploded around 12:57 a.m., pushing the plume above 4,000 metres for the first time since Oct. 18 last year, the local meteorological observatory reported.
- The Japan Meteorological Agency issued ashfall forecasts for parts of Kagoshima, Kumamoto and Miyazaki prefectures and advised residents and drivers to use umbrellas or masks and drive slowly.
- Large volcanic rocks fell as far down the slope as the fifth station, local officials in Kagoshima Prefecture reported no injuries or building damage so far.
- Sakurajima, a longtime active volcano linked to the Osumi Peninsula on Kyushu, remains at alert level three on a scale of five, restricting access to the mountain.
