Sajjan Kumar, Former Congress MP Convicted in Anti-Sikh Riots Case, Passes Away
The former Congress leader had been serving concurrent life sentences in 1984 anti-Sikh riot cases after convictions in 2018 and 2025.
On Thursday, former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar died at the age of 80 while serving life sentences in Tihar Jail for his role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
The Delhi High Court convicted Kumar of criminal conspiracy in 2018, overturning a 2013 acquittal in the Palam Colony case; a separate 2025 conviction in Saraswati Vihar also carried life imprisonment.
Courts described the 1984 anti-Sikh violence as "crimes against humanity," while the Rouse Avenue Court convicted Kumar for a mob attack in Vikaspuri and Janakpuri that killed Jaswant Singh and Tarundeep Singh.
ANI reported that prison officials brought Kumar to New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital, where he was declared dead while serving concurrent life sentences.
Despite securing an acquittal at the Rouse Avenue Court on January 22, 2026, Kumar remained imprisoned until his death, concluding years of legal proceedings regarding the 1984 violence.
