National crime rates and crime severity both fell in 2025: StatCan
The decline was driven by fewer break-ins, homicides and car thefts, while shoplifting rose 11% to 208,941 incidents, police said.
- Statistics Canada reported that both the national crime rate and severity of crimes decreased in 2025, with the crime severity index dropping for the second consecutive annual decline.
- Declines occurred in most major cities, provinces, and territories, excluding New Brunswick and Nunavut, following an eight-year period when the crime severity index climbed steadily.
- Police reported drops in homicide rates and motor vehicle theft for the second consecutive year, while break-and-enter cases fell for a third consecutive year.
- Offsetting these improvements, shoplifting incidents rose for the fifth year in a row, reaching 208,941 cases in 2025, while extortion remained three times higher than a decade ago.
- The rate of child sexual abuse and exploitation materials fell 21 per cent to 36 incidents per 100,000 population in 2025, though Statistics Canada cautioned that generative artificial intelligence is driving a surge in unreported cases.
