Ryan Murphy Re-Creates 1981 LA as the Land of Sun and Serial Killers in 'The Shards'
The series adapts Bret Easton Ellis’s novel with period detail, music and fashion as it recreates a glamorous 1981 Los Angeles.
- On Wednesday, FX and Hulu debuted "The Shards," a nine-episode thriller created by Ryan Murphy and novelist Bret Easton Ellis, based on his 2023 novel of the same name.
- Set in 1981 Los Angeles, the series follows elite prep school seniors whose lives are disrupted by disturbing crimes and the mysterious arrival of Robert Mallory during summer.
- Production designer Cat Smith recreated iconic locations like the Sherman Oaks Galleria to capture a world of "noirish neon nights" and "bright, intense, colorful days." Smith said the show maintains "high style" throughout.
- In the second episode, "Don't You Want Me," Bret probes Robert's murky past as shocking evidence deepens the mystery surrounding a serial killer known as the Trawler.
- Portraying the fictionalized Ellis, Igby Rigney noted the creator is bringing "so much of himself and his life and his experience of 1981 to the show," exploring universal themes of identity and fear.
