Ruud beats Darderi to reach Italian Open final vs. Sinner or Medvedev
On Friday, Casper Ruud reached his first Italian Open final, defeating Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-1 despite a nearly two-hour rain delay in Rome.
This victory marks Ruud's tour-leading 140th match win on clay since 2020, a record no other ATP player has matched in tournament victories on the surface.
"It's my 10th semi-final I think in a Masters 1000 so you try to use that experience to your advantage," Ruud said, explaining how his experience overcame Darderi's nerves.
Sunday's final at the Foro Italico will pit Ruud against either Jannik Sinner or Daniil Medvedev, both described as great players by the Norwegian.
Rome serves as the final major warmup before the French Open begins in nine days, and Ruud acknowledged facing Sinner would be a significant test seeking revenge from their previous meeting.
Casper Ruud (27) was the first to secure a place in the final of the Rome tennis tournament. The Norwegian world number 25 allowed the Italian Luciano Darderi (24) only two games in front of his home crowd: 6-1, 6-1.
