Russian sports minister says CAS ruling will let Russian skiers apply as neutrals to qualify for Winter Olympics
The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled Russians can qualify as neutral athletes for Milan-Cortina 2026, overturning FIS bans and allowing about 15 competitors, sports minister said.
- On Tuesday, Russian sports minister Mikhail Degtyaryov said the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the International Ski and Snowboard Federation's blanket ban, allowing Russian skiers to apply as neutrals for Milan Cortina qualification events.
- After Russia's February 2022 invasion, the International Ski and Snowboard Federation imposed a blanket ban that was renewed in October, excluding Russians from team sports mainly for security reasons.
- The IOC must assess neutral status before inviting Russian and Belarusian athletes, approving those without public invasion support or military ties under IOC guidance.
- With little time, FIS must process applications before a Jan. 18 deadline, and Degtyaryov said he expects about 15 Russians to compete at the Feb. 6 Games.
- Previously, some Russian and Belarusian athletes competed at the Paris Summer Games last year without national flags, while visa hurdles complicate qualifying events and FIS operates 57 of 116 gold medal events.
