Russia’s Public Health Watchdog Denies a Second Infection in Suspected Pneumonic Plague Case – WTOP News
WHO sought more details after Russia said extensive testing found no evidence the lab worker’s illness came from plague pathogens.
On Thursday, Russia's public health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor denied that a lab worker in Siberia spread infection to another person, rejecting reports of a second case as fake.
The lab worker at a research institute in Irkutsk died of pneumonia of unknown origin on Oct. 2, with unconfirmed reports in Russia blaming the death on pneumonic plague, a severe form capable of human-to-human transmission.
Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO director of Epidemic and Pandemic Management, said the agency does not know the cause of death, while Rospotrebnadzor claimed "extensive" testing found no evidence the illness stemmed from pathogens the worker handled.
Rospotrebnadzor confirmed "no emergencies in dealing with pathogens" during a biological safety probe and noted the deceased worker had been vaccinated and held immunity to dangerous infections.
The World Health Organization has requested further information to clarify the pneumonia cause; Russian state-controlled media have largely avoided the subject while Some news outlets withdrew earlier reports.
