Russian investigators question Novaya Gazeta editor after raiding his home
Authorities say the case concerns unlawful use of personal data as Novaya Gazeta faces continued pressure over its reporting.
- On Thursday, Russian law enforcement officers raided the Moscow apartment of Sergei Sokolov, editor-in-chief of the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, before taking him for questioning.
- The Investigative Committee is investigating allegations of illegal personal information usage, part of an ongoing criminal case opened earlier this spring, sources told the RBC outlet.
- Previously, investigators charged Novaya Gazeta managing editor Oleg Roldugin with the same crime in April, and Baza reported that authorities suspect Sokolov coordinated with or instructed Roldugin.
- Novaya Gazeta lost contact with Sokolov around noon Moscow time, and the publication confirmed he is being transported to the Investigative Committee for questioning while a lawyer assists him.
- The Committee called for Sokolov's release and an end to targeted prosecution, even as Novaya Gazeta continues publishing online despite ceasing print editions after the Ukraine invasion.
