Russia Briefly Detains Cargo Ship Bound for Estonia
The vessel was released after a brief inspection, and Estonian officials said Russia gave no explanation for the detention.
On Thursday, October 1, Russian authorities detained a German-owned cargo ship sailing from Monsteras, Sweden, toward the Port of Sillam, Estonia, for inspection.
To save 4.5 miles and 40 minutes of travel time, the vessel used a route skirting Russian territory despite Estonian authorities advising against it since 2022.
The Cyprus-registered ship was released Thursday, and The Estonian Transport Administration called the situation "unpleasant," noting countries possess rights to inspect vessels in territorial waters.
This marks the first known Russian detention of a vessel in the area since 2025, as the border region has been a frequent scene of confrontations.
Earlier maritime incidents include Estonia's 2025 detention of the 115,577 dwt tanker Kiwala and attempts to board the crude oil tanker Jaguar, which sparked an international incident.
RUSSIAN border police detained the German-owned cargo ship Västerbotten as it sailed through Russian waters towards Estonia. The incident occurs at a time of heightened tensions at sea.
