Russia will boost ties with Iran, Kremlin says
- Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on October 20 that `Russia is definitely ready to expand cooperation with Iran in all areas. Iran is our partner, and our relations are developing very dynamically`, adding Moscow will continue cooperation including in peaceful nuclear energy.
- Last month, Rosatom, Russian state nuclear energy giant, signed a deal to build four nuclear plants in Iran, which has one in Bushehr, and Putin signed a partnership with Masoud Pezeshkian in January.
- Moscow says it legally supplies Tehran with military equipment while Tehran has repeatedly denied supplying drones despite evidence, and an envoy for Vladimir Putin will meet Ali Larijani later on Monday.
- The European Union Council on September 29 reintroduced sanctions over Iran's nuclear activities, and the United States imposed restrictions on October 1 against 44 individuals and organisations.
- In recent years, Russia has increasingly stepped up support for Iran and acted as a mediator between Tehran, Tel Aviv and Washington, while condemning US and Israeli strikes earlier this year.
