Russia was behind parcel fires in UK and Europe, investigators say
A joint probe involving multiple European countries identified 22 suspects linked to Russia’s GRU in a series of 2024 parcel explosions targeting courier depots and trucks.
- On March 6, 2026, Eurojust said investigators identified 22 suspects linked to parcel explosions in Europe in 2024 and suspect Russia's GRU involvement.
- In July 2024, four parcels were sent from Vilnius, with at least one igniting at Leipzig/Halle Airport and another at a DHL depot at Minworth, Sutton Coldfield.
- Investigators found suspects were recruited through online messaging platforms, tasks were divided so some did not know the true purpose, payments were often made in cryptocurrency, and two test packages were sent to the United States and Canada.
- Two cases have been sent to court with trials expected later this year, Lithuania's Deputy General Prosecutor Arturas Urbelis said five defendants face up to 10 years, while a 38-year-old Romanian man was arrested and international arrest warrants were issued for two suspects.
- Officials warned the devices could have caused far worse damage if ignited in flight, and a Government spokesperson said Russia's hostile action puts national security at risk.
