Russia Says US Has Not Honored Alaska Summit Understandings
Russian officials said Washington has not followed through on summit understandings and blamed a shift toward European allies for the breakdown.
Russia accused the United States on Tuesday of failing to honor "fundamental understandings" reached between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump at an Alaska summit last August, with three senior officials voicing frustration this week.
Following the summit, officials often cited the "spirit of Anchorage," reflecting Moscow's belief that Trump understood their demand for control over the Donbas region; Moscow expressed disappointment after Trump later suggested Ukraine could reclaim all seized territory.
Oleg Ignatov of the International Crisis Group said Moscow feels dismayed by the absence of U.S. diplomatic engagement since February, noting, "There's no structured diplomatic process, there's no deal on the table, there's actually nothing."
Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov claimed Washington is aligning with "rabid anti-Russian policies" pursued by Britain and France, while Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested the summit may have been a U.S. "ploy to buy time to rearm the Kyiv regime."
According to Gerhard Mangott, an Austrian analyst, Moscow believes the U.S. assists recent Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian oil refineries; Mangott predicted further military escalation, stating, "Putin needs to give a response that is visible to the population.
