Russia says it will send first diesel cargo to US on Thursday

The 40,000-metric-ton cargo is the first under a deal that could ease U.S. diesel prices, officials said.

  • On Thursday, Russia will ship its first tanker of diesel fuel to the United States, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said, marking the beginning of the agreed supply arrangement.
  • President Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin agreed to supply Russian diesel during an October 9 phone call, after which the Treasury Department issued a temporary license allowing fuel to reach global markets.
  • Russia is preparing to send several tankers as part of the diesel deal, Putin said during a meeting with Steve Witkoff, with the first shipment carrying 40,000 tons and future plans including 500,000 tons in November.
  • Trump said the two sides agreed on the "immediate" delivery of Russian diesel, though Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the agreement as an "investment in war."
  • Novak stated the signing of the relevant contract is "in its final stage," adding that further shipments "will follow"; Russia aims to fully restore its diesel fuel export volumes by the end of 2026.
