Russia says it struck Ukrainian electricity grid facilities in massive overnight attack
Ukraine said 73 people were injured as Russian strikes hit 14 regions, damaging power plants, rail lines and port infrastructure.
- On Tuesday, the Russian Defence Ministry said it launched a massive overnight strike on Ukrainian electricity facilities in Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv regions, targeting power supplies to military factories and the Ukrainian army.
- Russia carried out the attack on three DTEK thermal power stations using dozens of missiles and drones, causing extensive damage. "The power stations have ceased generating electricity," the statement added.
- The ministry reported hitting four power plants and two electricity substations plus port infrastructure in Kiliia on the Danube. It also struck two cargo ships in the Black Sea and Pivdennyi port, alleging they carried military cargo.
- Extensive damage from the strikes halted electricity generation at the affected stations. Reuters noted it could not independently verify the claims made by the ministry regarding targets or cargo ship details.
- The incident underscores the intensity of Russia's campaign against critical energy infrastructure, with the threat of further attacks remaining. Restoration work is ongoing at sites where safety conditions permit, involving emergency personnel and energy workers.
