"You can tell that Russia can't respond because it doesn't have the resources. Those resources are already being used for the war in Ukraine," says Russia expert Jan Balliauw on Terzake. Russia has been an ally of Iran for years, but for now, it can't support the country. However, the war in the Middle East could also benefit Russian President Putin. "The spotlight is not on Ukraine right now."
After the fall of Bashar Al-Assad in Syria and Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela, Vladimir Putin was able to offer only words of support to the Iranian government, a "global strategic partner" of Moscow, after the death of the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. The war on the Gulf also has an impact on Russia: on the one hand, Tehran is an ally of Moscow, which provided Russia with drone technology, especially at the beginning of the Ukraine war. On the other hand, the emerging shortages of oil and gas on the world market could offer Russia an opportunity to earn better with its energy exports constrained by sanctions.
