B.C. man dies, three weeks after fighting off grizzly bear
Joe Pendry survived a grizzly bear attack with severe injuries but died weeks later from a blood clot, highlighting risks faced by hunters in bear habitats.
- On Oct. 25, Joe Pendry, 63, died in hospital weeks after a mother grizzly severely injured him earlier this month.
- On Oct. 2, Pendry encountered a sow grizzly bear and her two older cubs while hunting elk near Fort Steele, northeast of Cranbrook, his wife told The Canadian Press.
- Fighting for his life, Pendry shot the charging bear in the leg and punched and bit its ear, suffering torn lips, a lost finger, multiple broken bones, and was flown to Kelowna General Hospital.
- The B.C. Conservation Officer Service said it recovered the bear and confirmed by DNA analysis it was involved in the Fort Steele area attack days later.
- According to WildSafeBC, the COS receives approximately 400 to 500 calls per year about grizzly bears, and attacks are uncommon but can occasionally be fatal; B.C.'s Environment Ministry noted cubs typically stay with their mother until their fourth summer.
