Royals, Orioles show frustration during dugout-emptying confrontation
The Orioles said imaging showed a non-displaced fracture in Blaze Alexander’s left hand, and manager Craig Albernaz called the injury a gut punch.
On Sunday, Baltimore Orioles utility player Blaze Alexander sustained a non-displaced fracture in his left hand after being struck by a 95-mph fastball from Kansas City Royals right-hander Lucas Erceg, prompting both teams' benches to clear in the seventh inning.
Frustration became alarmingly evident for both clubs, which entered the game at the bottom of their divisions after struggling through a lackluster first half of the season.
Erceg insisted the inside pitch was accidental, even though Samuel Basallo's home run had just given Baltimore an 8-2 lead. "I'm not going out there to hit guys," Erceg said.
Kansas City manager Matt Quatraro described the team's mood after being swept for the eighth time, saying, "Disappointment, anger... every emotion that you can think of we're battling, not getting any results and it stinks."
Orioles manager Craig Albernaz called the loss of Alexander, who leads the team with a.312 batting average, "definitely a gut punch" as Baltimore heads into the All-Star break without a return timetable for their utility player.
