Royal Mail Launches New Christmas Stamps 60 Years After Festive Tradition Began
Royal Mail has unveiled its new Christmas stamps featuring traditional Nativity scenes ahead of the festive season. The collection depicts key biblical moments including Mary and Joseph's journey, the infant Jesus, an angel, shepherds, and the Three Wise Men.
This year marks six decades since the first Christmas special stamps appeared on December 1, 1966, following a children's art contest announced by then-postmaster general Tony Benn in May that year.
Designer Gareth Howat and illustrator Rebecca Sutherland created the collection, capturing familiar moments from the Christmas story for senders this winter season. Sutherland said creating the stamps was "an absolute honour," calling it "a career highlight."
Royal Mail's David Gold stated the stamps will add "an extra touch of festive magic" to millions of greetings sent worldwide. The release reflects the postal service's commitment to enriching holiday correspondence with artistic tradition.
Separately, Royal Mail released Armistice Day stamps featuring poppies by artist Matthew Cook, honoring 110 years since the Battle of the Somme began on July 1, 1916. The dual release underscores the postal service's role in marking both festive and commemorative occasions.
