Royal Mail lists 10 'high-risk' UK postcode areas and makes plea
On Monday, Royal Mail reported 2,019 dog attacks on postal workers over the past year, marking an 8% decrease from the previous period. Health and Safety Director Lizz Lloyd stressed that "every attack is one too many" despite the improvement.
Most incidents occur on private property, with 1,048 attacks taking place at the front door—representing 52% of total incidents. Royal Mail data shows these front-door attacks pose the greatest ongoing risk to delivery staff during routine work.
Sheffield tops the list for the second consecutive year with 61 attacks, followed by Doncaster and Guildford with 53 each. These postcode areas consistently rank among the highest-risk locations since Royal Mail began publishing regional data.
During the 14th annual Dog Awareness Week, Royal Mail disclosed that attacks resulted in 3,442 days of absence in 2025/26, with some workers experiencing permanent injuries lasting over 300 days. The scale underscores the serious toll on postal staff.
Royal Mail urges owners to keep pets in separate rooms or gardens during deliveries and recommends installing secure mailboxes. The company notes that even friendly dogs can react unpredictably, making prevention essential to worker safety.
