Royal Mail delays full rollout of postal overhaul until after Christmas
The company said the pause will let staff focus on Christmas deliveries as it reports 9% better first-class service under the new model.
Royal Mail revealed it will halt the full rollout of its second-class post overhaul until after Christmas, waiting until January 11 to apply changes in the final 107 delivery offices across the UK.
The company agreed with the Communication Workers Union to delay expanding reforms, calling the pause a "pragmatic approach" to maintain momentum while focusing on a successful Christmas for customers.
Chief executive Alistair Cochrane said the new delivery model is active in under 1,100 offices; while first-class service improved by 9%, the operator missed Ofcom targets, delivering 85 per cent of mail the next day.
Last week, Prime Minister Andy Burnham described the service as "unacceptable for far too long" and warned the Government would consider "further measures" unless Royal Mail produced a swift plan.
Amid a more than 70% decline in letter volumes, the company is undergoing a "significant transformation," including plans to recruit 22,000 temporary workers for Christmas and cut up to 2,500 head office roles by 2027.
