McIlroy and Cantlay Are Part of a 4-Way Tie for the Early Lead in the Scottish Open
McIlroy posted an opening 65 and tied Tom Kim, Bernd Wiesberger and Patrick Cantlay for the lead, with Brooks Koepka one shot behind.
On Thursday, Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy opened the Genesis Scottish Open with a 5-under 65 at The Renaissance Club, sharing the early lead in a four-way tie with three other competitors.
McIlroy adopted a 'less-is-more' scheduling philosophy this year, playing his first tournament since last month's U.S. Open to maintain enthusiasm and competitive sharpness.
Tom Kim, Patrick Cantlay, and Bernd Wiesberger joined McIlroy atop the leaderboard, while five-time major winner Brooks Koepka sits one shot back at four under after struggling with his putting.
Newly-Crowned U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark and Scot Bob MacIntyre both carded 67s, while Shane Lowry signed for a 71 and Pádraig Harrington struggled with a four-over 74.
This tournament serves as preparation for The 154th Open at Royal Birkdale next week, allowing players to acclimate to seaside conditions and the slightly slower greens expected at the major.
Bernd Wiesberger made an excellent start to the Scottish Golf Open on Thursday. He leads the field in a quintet with Rory McIlroy. The Burgenländer finished the first round of the top tournament open to PGA players of the DP World Tour in North Berwick with 65 beats, five under Par. Wiesberger shined with seven Birdies, but also recorded two Bogeys. For Sepp Straka, the rehearsal for the next week's British Open began with a 70 mediocre.
